Independent Journalism. Verified Facts. Public Accountability.

Our Commitment to Independent Journalism

At Keep Updated UK, we believe the public deserves journalism that is accurate, transparent, responsible and independent.

Our mission is to inform the public about matters affecting the United Kingdom, examine decisions made by those in positions of authority, investigate issues of public concern and provide factual reporting that readers can trust.

We cover subjects including government policy, public spending, policing, immigration and borders, local authorities, the NHS, the economy and community affairs.

Our journalism is guided by evidence, fairness and the public interest, rather than political allegiance, commercial pressure or personal opinion.

These Editorial Standards set out the principles that govern our reporting, investigations, articles, photographs, videos and other published content.

1. Editorial Independence

Keep Updated UK is committed to making editorial decisions independently.

Our editorial coverage must not be determined by political parties, government departments, advertisers, commercial partners or other external interests.

We recognise that public institutions, elected officials, businesses and individuals should be subject to legitimate scrutiny where their actions affect the public.

We also recognise that criticism must be supported by evidence and that those facing serious allegations should be treated fairly.

Our editorial decisions are guided by the significance of a story, the reliability of available information and its relevance to the public.

We do not alter factual reporting to support a particular political narrative.

2. Accuracy and Fact-Checking

Accuracy is fundamental to our journalism.

Before publishing, we take reasonable steps to verify factual claims and assess the reliability of the information available.

Depending on the subject, this may include examining official records, government publications, court documents, Freedom of Information responses, public datasets, statements from relevant organisations, eyewitness accounts and other credible sources.

Where appropriate, we seek independent corroboration.

We distinguish confirmed facts from allegations, estimates, speculation and information that remains unverified.

Headlines, photographs, captions and social media descriptions must accurately reflect the supporting information.

We will not knowingly publish false or misleading information.

Where facts remain uncertain, we will make that uncertainty clear rather than presenting assumptions as established facts.

3. Fairness, Balance and Impartiality

Keep Updated UK is committed to fairness in its reporting.

We recognise that public issues can involve competing opinions, conflicting evidence and strongly held beliefs.

Where relevant, we aim to represent significant perspectives fairly and accurately without misrepresenting the positions of those involved.

Fairness does not require treating every claim as equally credible when the available evidence clearly supports one conclusion over another.

Our responsibility is to establish and communicate the facts, not to manufacture artificial balance.

Journalists and contributors must distinguish personal beliefs from factual reporting.

We will not knowingly omit essential context in a way that materially misleads readers.

4. Investigations and Public Accountability

Investigative journalism is an important part of Keep Updated UK's purpose.

We may investigate matters including public expenditure, government contracts, public authority decisions, misuse of public resources, failures in public services and other matters of legitimate public concern.

Our investigations must be grounded in evidence and conducted responsibly.

We will take reasonable steps to verify documents, assess the reliability of sources and distinguish evidence from interpretation.

When an investigation makes serious allegations about an identifiable individual or organisation, we will normally seek their response before publication, providing a fair opportunity to address the relevant claims.

Any response received will be considered fairly and included where appropriate.

We will not present an allegation as a proven finding merely because it has been made by a source.

Investigations must serve a legitimate public interest and must not be used to pursue personal vendettas, harassment or unsupported accusations.

5. Sources and Confidentiality

Reliable sources are essential to responsible journalism.

Where possible, we identify the original source of significant factual information and provide appropriate references.

We may use confidential or anonymous sources where there is a legitimate justification, including reasonable concerns about retaliation, personal safety or professional consequences.

The credibility and motivations of confidential sources must be assessed carefully.

We will seek corroborating evidence where reasonably possible, particularly when anonymous information supports serious allegations.

Confidentiality arrangements must be considered before commitments are made, including any relevant legal limitations.

We will not fabricate sources, quotations, interviews, documents or eyewitness accounts.

6. Corrections, Clarifications and Updates

We recognise that mistakes can occur in journalism.

When a significant factual error is brought to our attention or independently identified, we will investigate and correct it promptly once established.

Corrections will be made transparently and with prominence appropriate to the original error.

Where appropriate, a correction notice will explain what was inaccurate and what has been amended.

Substantial corrections will not be concealed through silent alterations.

Where new verified information becomes available, an article may be updated. Material updates will be identified when necessary to avoid misleading readers.

If an article has been shared on our social media channels, we will consider whether the correction also needs to be communicated to those audiences.

Where appropriate, we may publish an apology.

Our objective is to ensure that the public record remains as accurate and transparent as possible.

7. Right of Reply

Individuals, public authorities, businesses and organisations facing significant criticism or allegations should normally be given a reasonable opportunity to respond before publication.

We aim to communicate the substance of relevant allegations clearly and allow a reasonable opportunity for a response, taking account of the circumstances and public interest.

Where no response is received before publication, we may explain that a response was requested.

We will consider relevant responses provided after publication and update reporting where appropriate.

Providing a right of reply does not give the subject of an investigation control over our editorial decisions.

8. Privacy, Dignity and Vulnerable Individuals

Keep Updated UK respects personal privacy and human dignity.

We recognise that reporting may involve people experiencing grief, illness, distress, financial hardship or other sensitive circumstances.

We will consider whether publishing private information is necessary and proportionate to a legitimate public interest.

Particular care will be taken when reporting on children, victims of crime, vulnerable individuals and people experiencing traumatic events.

We will not unnecessarily publish private addresses, personal contact details or other sensitive identifying information.

The availability of information online does not automatically justify its republication.

We will consider the potential consequences of identifying individuals before publication.

9. Reporting on Immigration, Crime and Public Safety

Keep Updated UK recognises the importance of accurate and responsible reporting on immigration, asylum, crime, policing and public safety.

These subjects may generate significant public debate and require careful examination of evidence.

We will distinguish between different immigration and legal statuses where relevant and avoid making unsupported assumptions about individuals.

We will not treat allegations, rumours or unverified social media claims as established facts.

Where reporting involves criminal investigations or court proceedings, we will respect applicable reporting restrictions, the presumption of innocence and relevant legal obligations.

We will not knowingly publish content intended to incite hatred, violence or unlawful discrimination.

Our responsibility is to report matters of public interest without unfairly targeting individuals or communities.

10. Photographs, Videos and Artificial Intelligence

Visual accuracy is an essential part of our editorial standards.

Photographs and videos must not be presented in a way that materially misrepresents the event, location, individual or circumstances being reported.

Where imagery is illustrative, reconstructed, digitally created or generated using artificial intelligence, we will identify it clearly when readers might otherwise mistake it for genuine documentary material.

AI-generated imagery must not be presented as authentic photographic evidence of an event that it does not depict.

Artificial intelligence may be used to assist with research organisation, transcription, drafting, editing or visual production, subject to human editorial oversight.

AI-generated claims, quotations, statistics and references must be independently checked before publication.

We will not knowingly use artificial intelligence to fabricate evidence, interviews or statements.

Third-party photographs, videos and written materials must be used with appropriate permissions, licences or another valid legal basis.

11. News, Opinion and Analysis

We believe readers should be able to identify the nature of the content they are viewing.

Factual news reports, opinion pieces, analysis, investigations and sponsored material should be clearly distinguishable.

News reporting must prioritise verified facts and relevant context.

Analysis may examine evidence, trends and possible implications, but must distinguish established facts from interpretation.

Opinion content may express a particular viewpoint, but factual assertions within it remain subject to our standards of accuracy.

We will not deliberately present opinion as independently verified news.

12. Advertising and Commercial Transparency

Keep Updated UK recognises the importance of maintaining a clear separation between editorial content and commercial interests.

Advertising, sponsorship and commercial relationships must not compromise factual reporting or editorial independence.

Paid-for content that could reasonably be mistaken for independent editorial material will be clearly identified.

Relevant financial interests or conflicts that could materially affect how readers assess content should be disclosed.

Advertisers and sponsors do not receive an automatic right to influence independent reporting or suppress legitimate criticism.

13. Reporting in the Public Interest

Our journalism aims to serve the public interest.

Matters of public interest may include the use of taxpayers' money, the conduct of public officials, government accountability, public safety, failures of public services and potential wrongdoing.

However, public curiosity alone does not automatically establish a sufficient public-interest justification for intrusive reporting.

We will consider the seriousness of the issue, the reliability of the evidence, the rights of those affected and whether the proposed reporting is necessary and proportionate.

Freedom of expression and the public's right to receive information are fundamental principles, but they must be exercised responsibly and in accordance with applicable law.

14. Complaints and Editorial Accountability

We welcome legitimate feedback, factual corrections and complaints about our journalism.

Anyone who believes an article contains a significant factual error, unfair allegation, privacy concern or other breach of these standards may contact us through our website's Contact Us page.

Please identify the relevant article, explain the concern and provide any supporting evidence available.

Complaints will be assessed on their merits.

We aim to acknowledge formal editorial complaints within five working days and provide a substantive response within 20 working days where reasonably possible. Where additional investigation is required, we will explain any significant delay.

If a complaint identifies a material error or other issue requiring action, we will take appropriate steps, which may include correcting, clarifying, updating or removing relevant material, or publishing a response.

We will consider reasonable challenges to our editorial decisions fairly.

15. Our Commitment to Readers

The credibility of Keep Updated UK depends on public confidence.

We recognise that trust must be earned through our reporting, transparency, willingness to investigate difficult subjects and readiness to correct mistakes.

We will continue to review our editorial practices as the publication develops.

Our commitments are to:

Report the facts. Examine the evidence. Challenge responsibly. Correct our mistakes. Serve the public interest.

These standards are Keep Updated UK's own editorial commitments. Any formal membership of an external press regulatory organisation will be identified separately if applicable.
