A total of 16,021 people receiving asylum support were accommodated in hotels at the end of June 2026, according to official Home Office statistics.

Overall, 93,293 people were receiving asylum support at the end of June.

Hotel accommodation therefore accounted for around 17% of those receiving support.

Hotel numbers have fallen substantially

Although thousands of people remain in hotel accommodation, the number has fallen sharply from previous levels.

The 16,021 figure was:

  • 50% lower than at the end of June 2025
  • 71% below the peak of 56,018 people recorded at the end of September 2023.

A further 73,068 people were in non-hotel accommodation, while 4,204 were receiving subsistence support only.

Who receives asylum support?

Asylum support can apply to people at different points within the asylum system.

At the end of June, 40,168 people were awaiting an initial asylum decision, while substantially more people — 93,293 — were receiving asylum support.

The Home Office explains that this is because some people receiving support are at other stages, including appeals, while some people whose claims have failed can qualify for limited support where they are destitute and temporarily unable to leave the UK.

Government plans to move away from hotels

The government has stated that it intends to stop using hotels for asylum accommodation.

Former military sites and other forms of accommodation are being used as part of that process.

At the end of June, official figures recorded 744 people at Wethersfield and 418 people at Crowborough Training Camp.

What Keep Updated UK will examine

Keep Updated UK intends to report on asylum accommodation using verifiable information including:

government statistics, council records, contracts, procurement information and responses from the organisations involved.

Where exact hotel occupancy or costs cannot be independently established, we will make that clear rather than substituting estimates or rumours.
