A total of 1,739 people were recorded arriving in the United Kingdom via small boats during the first seven days of October, according to the latest provisional Home Office statistics.

The figures, updated on 8 October, show that arrivals were concentrated across several days, despite periods when no crossings were recorded.

Monday 5 October saw the highest daily total of the week, with 609 people arriving aboard eight boats.

What do the latest figures show?

According to the Home Office:

  • 1 October: No recorded arrivals.
  • 2 October: 91 people aboard one boat.
  • 3 October: 164 people aboard two boats.
  • 4 October: 418 people aboard five boats.
  • 5 October: 609 people aboard eight boats.
  • 6 October: 338 people aboard five boats.
  • 7 October: 119 people aboard two boats.

The figures demonstrate how significantly crossing activity can fluctuate over relatively short periods.

Weather and sea conditions can influence whether boats attempt the crossing, although the published arrival numbers do not establish the cause of each daily change.

What happens when boats reach British waters?

Small boats crossing the English Channel can be detected by British authorities at sea or upon arrival.

Where migrants are intercepted and subsequently brought to the United Kingdom, they are included in the Home Office's small-boat arrival statistics.

The published dataset does not include people prevented from leaving France or intercepted and returned by French authorities.

It also does not capture undetected arrivals.

How does this compare with the wider picture?

The Home Office's quarterly immigration statistics show approximately 33,000 small-boat arrivals during the 12 months ending June 2026.

That represented a 23% reduction compared with the previous 12-month period.

However, the figures also demonstrate that Channel crossings remain an ongoing operational challenge for border authorities.

What happens next?

The Home Office continues to publish provisional daily arrival figures, allowing changes in crossing activity to be tracked throughout the year.

These figures can subsequently be revised following further verification.

Keep Updated UK will continue examining daily crossings, weather conditions and border enforcement activity to establish a clearer picture of developments in the English Channel.
