Up to £21.19 billion in funding has been agreed for policing in England and Wales for the financial year ending 31 March 2027, according to Home Office statistics.

That represents an increase of up to £1.298 billion — 6.5% in nominal terms — compared with the previous financial year.

What does £21.19bn include?

The headline number does not mean £21.19 billion has simply been handed directly to territorial police forces.

The overall figure includes several forms of policing expenditure, including:

  • government funding to Police and Crime Commissioners
  • locally raised police precept
  • wider policing-system funding
  • counter-terrorism policing
  • additional funding outside the main settlement
  • capital funding for areas such as technology programmes.

That distinction matters when comparing the national headline figure with the amount available to an individual local force.

Increase after inflation

The Home Office says that after adjusting for inflation, overall agreed funding is up by as much as £899 million, or 4.4%, compared with the previous year.

Funding available to Police and Crime Commissioners, including government funding and council-tax precept, is expected to rise by up to £798 million in nominal terms.

Police grants

Separate Home Office documentation sets out the final grant allocations to individual policing bodies for 2026–27.

These allocations vary across England and Wales and should be examined individually when assessing the position of a particular force.

What Keep Updated UK will examine

Future Keep Updated UK reporting will look beyond headline national funding announcements when covering policing.

Where possible, we will examine:

  • local-force allocations
  • Police and Crime Commissioner budgets
  • council-tax precepts
  • staffing
  • what additional funding is actually intended to deliver.
