The proposed development covers more than 700 hectares and includes solar panels, battery storage and associated electricity infrastructure.
The Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero approved the project on 21 August 2026 through the nationally significant infrastructure planning process.
However, Lincolnshire County Council says the development raises serious concerns about agricultural land, local communities and the cumulative impact of major solar projects across the county.
Why is the council challenging the decision?
The authority announced on 2 October that it had submitted a judicial review claim to the High Court.
It argues that insufficient weight may have been given to the effects of the development on the surrounding rural landscape and agricultural land.
The council has also raised concerns about the cumulative effects of multiple large-scale energy developments being proposed or approved in Lincolnshire.
Its legal challenge seeks to have the government's decision-making process examined by the courts.
What is Beacon Fen Energy Park?
Beacon Fen is a proposed solar energy development near Heckington.
The project forms part of wider efforts to expand renewable electricity generation and associated infrastructure.
Large-scale solar farms can contribute to national electricity supply and efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
However, developments covering extensive areas of land can also generate concerns over agricultural use, visual impact and changes to rural communities.
These competing considerations form part of the broader planning debate surrounding the project.
What does a judicial review mean?
A judicial review examines whether a public authority made a decision lawfully.
It does not simply allow a court to replace a planning decision because one party disagrees with it.
In this case, the High Court will first consider whether the council's challenge can proceed beyond the permission stage.
A full hearing would depend on that initial legal assessment.
The launch of the proceedings does not mean the government's approval has been overturned or that the project has been cancelled.
Is this the only solar project being challenged?
No. Lincolnshire County Council is also involved in an ongoing legal challenge concerning Springwell Solar Farm, alongside North Kesteven District Council.
The authority has repeatedly raised concerns about the concentration of nationally significant energy developments within Lincolnshire.
For residents, the Beacon Fen dispute raises wider questions about local influence over major infrastructure decisions and how national energy objectives should be balanced against environmental and agricultural considerations.
Keep Updated UK will follow the court proceedings, government response and implications for other proposed solar developments in Lincolnshire.
