Northern Ireland’s Department of Health has announced an extra £2.3 million in recurring annual funding for neurology services, with the stated aim of expanding capacity and beginning to reduce waiting lists.
Health Minister Robbie Butler also announced a dedicated Neurology Delivery Team to support the implementation of the department’s regional review of neurology services. The measures were outlined on 8 October alongside publication of the review consultation outcome.
Why neurology services matter
Neurology covers conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord and nervous system. Patients may need specialist diagnosis, follow-up care and coordination with other services. Delays can create uncertainty for people waiting to understand the cause of symptoms or begin a care plan.
Funding announced, results still to be measured
The department says the extra money is recurrent, meaning it is intended as ongoing annual funding rather than a single one-off allocation. But an announcement is not evidence that waits have already reduced. The impact will depend on recruitment, service planning and the speed with which extra capacity becomes available.
What to watch next
The government has acknowledged variations in access and long waits. The key measures for patients will be changes in waiting times, consistency between health and social care trusts, and access to the specialists and follow-up support people require.
Keep Updated UK will examine future delivery milestones and whether published performance data demonstrate progress against the commitments announced today.
